Devil's Third Drops Online Mode in Japan After Only 16 Months

The multiplayer component of Wii U title Devil's Third will cease to operate in Japan from December 29. According to Japanese website Inside Games, as reported by Kotaku, the in-game microtransactions will be shut down and the game's price will be reduced to ¥3,618 ($35) from June 24.

It is unclear whether publisher Nintendo plans to make similar changes to the game internationally.

Devil's Third was developed by Valhalla Game Studios, a studio founded by Ninja Gaiden designer Tomonobu Itagaki and other former Tecmo staff.

The game was originally going to be published by the now-defunct publisher THQ. At the time, it was an Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC game, but later shifted to become a Nintendo-exclusive.

Prior to its launch, amidst reports the game had technical problems, there was some uncertainty whether Nintendo would honor its publishing deal with Valhalla Games. Rumours suggested Nintendo was distancing itself from the game.

Nintendo did eventually publish Devil's Third, but reviews of the game were generally negative. It received a score of 3 in GameSpot's review, which said it's nearly impossible to recommend, despite its wonderfully weird multiplayer modes and occasional laughs. Its Metacritic rating currently sits at 43 out of 100 based on 54 reviews.
